About Cobblers' Bridge (Čevljarski most)

A roofless bridge lined with stone columns that Plečnik built as a square on the river, on the very spot where Ljubljana's shoemakers once hammered their soles over the water.

The Cobblers' Bridge, or Čevljarski most, is a low pedestrian bridge over the Ljubljanica linking Mestni trg with Novi trg in Ljubljana's old town. Jože Plečnik designed the present bridge, built in 1931 and 1932 to replace an earlier iron crossing on the same spot. He conceived it as a 'square on the river': a broad, balustraded platform carrying two rows of stone columns rather than a roof, so the view of the town stays open. The columns use two different orders, taller Corinthian ones along the outer edges, meant to hold lamps, and shorter Ionic ones down the middle. The crossing itself is medieval: a wooden covered bridge once stood here carrying the workshops of shoemakers, which gave the bridge its name, though an older tradition places butchers here first. The popular tale that cobblers were banished to the bridge for their smell is folklore. The bridge belongs to the UNESCO-listed works of Plečnik, inscribed in 2021.

Did you know? Look closely and the columns disagree with each other: the taller outer ones are Corinthian and were built to hold lamps, while the shorter inner pair are plainer Ionic. Two classical orders on one small bridge.
