About Bled Island (Blejski otok)
Slovenia's only natural island, reached by hand-rowed boat, where ninety-nine Baroque steps climb to a pilgrimage church and a wishing bell that visitors ring to make a wish.
Bled Island, in the middle of Lake Bled, is the only natural island in Slovenia. Its centrepiece is the pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary, which took its present Baroque form near the end of the 17th century but preserves fragments of Gothic frescoes from around 1470. A freestanding bell tower rises about 52 metres beside it.
Visitors climb to the church on a Baroque stairway of 99 stone steps, built in 1655. By tradition a groom carries his bride up the steps for good luck before the couple ring the church's bell. Inside hangs a 'wishing bell', rung by visitors making a wish, a custom tied to a legend about a grieving widow. Traditional flat-bottomed pletna boats, first recorded around 1590, ferry visitors across; since 1740, when Maria Theresa granted 22 local families exclusive rowing rights, the trade has remained restricted and largely hereditary.
Did you know? Ninety-nine steps climb from the boat landing to the church. Tradition says a groom who can carry his bride the whole way up without stopping will be rewarded with a happy marriage.
