About Corfu
Welcome to Corfu, the green island of the Ionian Sea. Off the north-west coast of Greece, facing the mountains of Albania and the Greek mainland, Corfu is an island of olive groves and cypress trees, steep cliffs and quiet bays. Its capital, also called Corfu, or Kerkyra in Greek, is one of the most elegant towns of the Mediterranean, and its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Corfu has always been a crossroads. In ancient times Korkyra was a great naval power, and its quarrel with Corinth helped start the Peloponnesian War. Since antiquity the island has been linked with Scheria, the land of the Phaeacians in Homer's Odyssey, where the shipwrecked Odysseus found help on his way home.
From 1386 to 1797 Venice ruled Corfu, and its fortresses held out against the Ottoman sieges of 1537, 1571 and 1716; the island never fell to them. Then came the French, and from 1815 the British, who ruled the Ionian Islands until 1864, when Corfu joined Greece. Each left its mark: Venetian fortresses, a French arcade, British palaces and the game of cricket.
On this tour we explore the old town, the Liston and the Spianada, the Old and the New Fortress, the church of Saint Spyridon, the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George, Mon Repos and the view of Kanoni and Pontikonisi, and the Archaeological Museum with its Gorgon. Then we travel out to the Achilleion palace, to Paleokastritsa and the castle of Angelokastro, and to Kassiopi in the north-east.
A few practical words. Summer is hot and busy, especially when cruise ships call, so spring and early autumn are often the best times to visit. Many sites have shorter hours in winter, and some close completely. Buses link the town with the villages, but the roads in the hills are narrow and winding, so allow plenty of time for every trip across the island.
Take your time. Corfu is best enjoyed slowly: a walk through the lanes in the morning, a coffee under the arches of the Liston, and the sun going down over the sea on the western coast.

Old Town of Corfu
Corfu is called a castle city because two fortresses, the Old Fortress by the sea and the New Fortress on a hill, enclose the old town between them.
Liston and Spianada
The Liston arcades were begun in 1807 under French rule, on the model of the Rue de Rivoli in Paris, and work continued into the British period.
Old Fortress
The Venetians cut a sea channel, the Contrafossa, through the rock in front of the Old Fortress, turning the headland into an island.
