About Paleokastritsa
Paleokastritsa on the north-west coast of Corfu, a village of small bays with clear blue water below green cliffs, and its monastery of the Virgin on the headland above the sea.
Tradition dates the monastery of the Virgin to the 1220s, but the oldest document is from 1469 and today's buildings are mostly 18th century. It has a small museum of icons.
The monastery is a working one and is usually open daily; entry is free, with a donation box. Dress modestly, as skirts and shawls are lent at the gate. The road up is steep and narrow.
Did you know? Local tradition says that on a beach at Paleokastritsa the shipwrecked Odysseus met the princess Nausicaa, as Homer tells in the Odyssey.
