About Mon Repos
Mon Repos, the neoclassical villa in a wooded park south of Corfu town, built for a British High Commissioner, later the summer home of the Greek royal family and the birthplace of Prince Philip in 1921.
The villa was built in 1828 to 1831 for Sir Frederick Adam and his Corfiot wife. King George I named it Mon Repos, and Prince Philip was born here in 1921. The park lies on the ancient city of Korkyra and holds the ruins of two temples.
The villa is now the Museum of Palaiopolis. The museum is closed on Tuesdays, and its hours change with the season, so check before you go. Paths in the park are rough in places.
Did you know? Prince Philip, later Duke of Edinburgh, was born at Mon Repos on 10 June 1921; family stories say he was born on the dining-room table.
