About Old Fortress

The Old Fortress of Corfu, a Venetian citadel on a rocky headland with two peaks, cut off from the town by a sea channel, which held out against three great Ottoman sieges.

The fortress stands on a headland with two peaks east of the town. The Venetians cut a sea channel, the Contrafossa, to make it an island, and it resisted the Ottoman sieges of 1537, 1571 and 1716.

The fortress is a ticketed site of the Greek Ministry of Culture, with shorter hours in winter. The paths up to the lighthouse are steep and uneven. Check the official hours before you go.

Did you know? The Venetians cut a sea channel, the Contrafossa, through the rock in front of the Old Fortress, turning the headland into an island.
