About Old Town of Corfu

The Old Town of Corfu, a fortified port town between two Venetian fortresses, with narrow lanes called kantounia, tall pastel houses and neoclassical squares, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.

Venice ruled Corfu from 1386 to 1797 and gave the town its street plan and its fortresses. The British, who ruled from 1815 to 1864, built much of what stands today. UNESCO listed the Old Town in 2007.

The lanes are public and free at all times. They are cobbled and can be slippery after rain. Many shops and churches close in the middle of the afternoon, and Easter week brings big processions and crowds.

Did you know? Corfu is called a castle city because two fortresses, the Old Fortress by the sea and the New Fortress on a hill, enclose the old town between them.
