About Liston and Spianada

The Liston, the arcaded promenade of Corfu modelled on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris, and the Spianada, the great green square before the Old Fortress where cricket is played.

The Liston was begun in 1807, under French rule, as a row of arcades facing the Spianada. The square itself was cleared by the Venetians to give the fortress guns an open field. The British brought cricket, which is still played on the lawn.

The square and the arcades are open to all, at any time, with no fee. The cafés are busiest in the evening. During a cricket match, please do not walk across the pitch.

Did you know? The Liston arcades were begun in 1807 under French rule, on the model of the Rue de Rivoli in Paris, and work continued into the British period.
