About New Fortress
The New Fortress of Corfu, the Venetian fortress of the late 16th century on the hill of Saint Mark above the old port, with bastions, tunnels and a winged lion of Venice over its gate.
The Venetians built the New Fortress in the late 16th century, after the Ottoman attacks of 1537 and 1571, and pulled down some two thousand houses to make room for it. The British added barracks.
Only the western part is open to visitors, because the rest is a naval base. Hours are limited and the fortress may close in winter. The ramps and steps are steep.
Did you know? To make room for the New Fortress in the late 16th century, the Venetians pulled down some two thousand houses of the suburb of San Rocco.
