About Kanoni and Pontikonisi

Kanoni, the headland south of Corfu town with the famous view of the white Vlacherna monastery on its causeway and Pontikonisi, Mouse Island, with its tiny Byzantine chapel.

Vlacherna monastery stands on a small islet joined to the shore by a footpath. Pontikonisi, a wooded islet with a Byzantine chapel of the 11th or 12th century, can be reached only by boat. A legend links it to the Phaeacian ship of the Odyssey.

The viewpoint and the causeway are free and always open. Boats to Pontikonisi leave from the piers at Kanoni and Perama. Planes land just overhead, so it can be very noisy.

Did you know? Local legend says Pontikonisi is the ship of the Phaeacians that carried Odysseus home, turned to stone by the angry sea god Poseidon.
