About Angelokastro

Angelokastro, the Byzantine castle on a high rock above the north-west coast of Corfu, which sheltered the islanders and was never taken in the Ottoman sieges, with wide views over the sea.

The castle stands about 300 metres above the sea. Its builders are unknown; it is first named in writing around 1272. During the Ottoman attacks of 1537, 1571 and 1716 it sheltered the people of the area and was never taken.

The castle is open in the summer season only and closes in winter; it is also closed on Tuesdays. A steep climb on stone steps leads up from the ticket office. Bring water and good shoes.

Did you know? The west side of Angelokastro has no walls at all, because the cliff there falls almost straight down into the sea, about 300 metres below.
