About Achilleion
The Achilleion at Gastouri, the palace that Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sisi, built around 1890 in honour of the hero Achilles, with terraced gardens of statues above the sea.
Empress Elisabeth built the palace around 1890 and named it after Achilles, her favourite hero. After her murder in 1898, Kaiser Wilhelm II bought it in 1907 and added a huge bronze Achilles.
The palace is a museum with longer hours in summer. Because of restoration work, only the gardens and outdoor areas may be open, so check before you go. It is about ten kilometres south of Corfu town.
Did you know? Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sisi, named the Achilleion after Achilles, the hero of Homer's Iliad, whom she admired above all others.
