About Kefalonia
Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands, a mountainous island off the west coast of Greece, ringed by cliffs and white beaches and crowned by the dark fir forests of Mount Ainos. Its villages lie scattered over the slopes, and the sea around it changes from deep blue to a turquoise that seems almost unreal at Myrtos and Melissani.
In antiquity the island held four city-states, among them Same, whose walls still stand above Sami. Before them, in the Mycenaean age, local rulers were buried in stone tombs like the one at Tzanata, and some still argue over whether Kefalonia was the Ithaca of Homer's Odyssey. That is a debated theory, not a proven fact.
For centuries the capital was a hilltop fortress, the Castle of Agios Georgios. Byzantines, Norman raiders, Italian counts and Ottomans came and went, until a Spanish and Venetian army took the castle in 1500. Venice then ruled for three hundred years and built the great fortress of Assos. The British followed, and in 1864 the island joined Greece.
The island's faith centres on Saint Gerasimos, a 16th-century monk whose relics lie in the Omala valley and whose feasts in August and October bring thousands of pilgrims.
Two disasters shaped modern Kefalonia. In September 1943 German forces killed thousands of Italian soldiers of the Acqui Division, the Italian garrison of the island. Ten years later, in August 1953, a great earthquake destroyed almost every town and village. Only Fiskardo in the far north kept its old houses, and Argostoli and the other towns were rebuilt.
The island is also a natural laboratory. At the Katavothres the sea flows into the ground near Argostoli and comes out two weeks later at Melissani on the far coast. Kefalonia and Ithaca now form a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the dark skies above Mount Ainos are protected too.
The island is large and its roads wind through the mountains, so plan your days by area. Caves, museums and some sites keep shorter hours or close in winter, and landslides can affect the cliffs above beaches, so check before you go. And leave time to sit by the sea in Assos or Fiskardo as the light fades.
