About Assos and its Venetian Fortress
A tiny harbour village on a narrow isthmus of the west coast, below a peninsula crowned by a large Venetian fortress begun in 1593, with a few pastel houses around a green bay.
Assos is a small village on the west coast of Kefalonia, about 36 kilometres north of Argostoli, built on a narrow isthmus and around a sheltered bay. Above it rises a steep peninsula crowned by a Venetian fortress, begun in 1593 by the engineer Marino di Gentilini after the loss of Cyprus, to protect the island. Its walls follow the edge of the peninsula for about three kilometres, and the main gate bears the year 1611.
Venice planned a town inside the walls, but few people settled there, and the village grew up below. The fortress later served as a prison, from the late 1920s until the 1953 earthquake. Inside are the ruins of the governor's house, the church of Saint Mark and old prison buildings. The path up is rough, with no shade.
Did you know? Work on the fortress of Assos began in 1593 under the Venetian engineer Marino di Gentilini, after Venice had lost Cyprus in 1571. The year 1611 is carved on its main gate.
