About Mycenaean Tomb of Tzanata

A Mycenaean beehive tomb of the 14th to 12th centuries BC in the olive groves near Poros, built of dry stone and found only in 1991, among the largest of its kind in western Greece.

The tholos tomb of Tzanata lies among olive, cypress and oak trees about two kilometres west of Poros, in south-east Kefalonia. It was identified in 1991 and excavated from 1992 to 1994 by the archaeologist Lazaros Kolonas. The round chamber, about 6.8 metres across, was built of dry stone, with walls preserved to about four metres, and is entered by a short stone passage.

It was used for burials of the local elite from about 1350 to 1100 BC, and it stands on the remains of an older, smaller tholos. The tomb was robbed in antiquity, but the excavators found seal stones, gold jewellery and fine pottery, now in the museum of Argostoli. A modern roof protects it. Some have linked it with Odysseus, but that is speculation.

Did you know? The tholos tomb of Tzanata was identified on 3 September 1991 and excavated from 1992 to 1994. Its round chamber is about 6.8 metres across.
