About Zakynthos
Welcome to Zakynthos, also called Zante, in the Ionian Sea off the west coast of Greece. It is an island of contrasts: in the west and north, white cliffs drop into a deep blue sea; in the south and east lie wide sandy bays and green plains of olives and vines; and in its heart rise wooded hills dotted with old villages.
For more than three hundred years, from the late fifteenth century to 1797, Zakynthos belonged to Venice. The Venetians called it Fiore di Levante, the Flower of the East, and it grew rich from olive oil and currants. Its noble families built fine houses and churches, and painters who came from Crete after 1669 created here a new school of art, which blended the Byzantine and the Italian. After a time under French, Russian and British rule, the island joined Greece in 1864.
Zakynthos gave Greece its national poet, Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the Hymn to Liberty, the words of the Greek national anthem. Its patron saint, Dionysios, lies in his church by the harbour, and the whole island celebrates him in August and December. In the Second World War, when the occupying forces demanded a list of the Jews of the island, the mayor, Loukas Karrer, and the bishop, Chrysostomos, refused to hand it over. By many accounts, all of the island's Jews survived.
On the twelfth of August 1953, a powerful earthquake struck the Ionian Islands, and a fire followed. Almost every building in Zakynthos town was destroyed. The town was rebuilt, with care to keep its old character, and its museums today keep the treasures saved from the ruins.
Today, the island is famous for its coast. On the north-west shore lies Navagio, the beach of the shipwreck, now seen only from the cliffs above. Around Cape Skinari, boats glide into the Blue Caves. In the south, Laganas Bay is a national marine park, where loggerhead sea turtles come every summer to lay their eggs on the beaches. Visit them with care and respect, follow the rules, and you will help them return. Enjoy Zakynthos, and let us begin.
