About Nafplio

You have arrived in the town where modern Greece began, and, as it happens, in its prettiest. Nafplio is a Venetian stage-set of marble lanes and faded shutters, wrapped around a headland beneath a colossal fortress, with a toy castle floating on the blue bay just offshore. Most Greeks will tell you it is the loveliest town in the country, and for once the boast is hard to argue with.

This corner of the Peloponnese is layered with beginnings. Three thousand years before these marble squares, the warlords of Mycenae raised the first great Greek kingdom just up the road, the golden world Homer would later sing about. In the classical age, the sanctuary of Epidaurus down the coast healed the sick and built the most beautiful theatre in the ancient world. And when Greece finally won its freedom, it was here in Nafplio that the young nation placed its first capital, and here, on a church step, that its first leader was assassinated three years later.

The town itself asks only to be strolled. Bougainvillea spills over the balconies, the smell of coffee and warm stone drifts through the lanes, and everyone drifts down to the waterfront in the evening for the volta, the slow social walk, and an enormous ice cream. Above it all looms Palamidi, the great Venetian fortress you reach by a stair the locals swear is nine hundred and ninety-nine steps.

The temptations reach well beyond the town. Up the valley, you can walk beneath the Lion Gate into the citadel of Mycenae, where an archaeologist once lifted a golden mask and believed he had found the face of Agamemnon. A short drive east, in the theatre of Epidaurus, a coin dropped on the ancient stage rings out clearly to the highest of fourteen thousand seats.

End the day back on the Nafplio waterfront, when the light goes pink and the little island fortress lights up in the bay. The tables fill, the fortress darkens on its crag, and the whole town seems to be out walking. It is a very easy place to stay one night longer than you planned. Start walking.

Did you know?

Three things most visitors miss

Syntagma Square

The square's Archaeological Museum holds the Dendra panoply, an almost complete suit of Mycenaean bronze armour from about the late fifteenth century BC, one of the oldest complete suits of armour known in Europe.

Archaeological Museum of Nafplio

A marble slab on the facade still credits Agostino Sagredo, the Venetian fleet commander who built the block in 1713 as a naval store. Only later did it hold soldiers, then antiquities.

Vouleftiko (First Greek Parliament)

The Vouleftiko was originally the Agha Pasha Mosque; local legend claims an Ottoman lord built it in remorse for murdering two Venetian treasure-hunters, though its true construction date remains uncertain.
