About Arvanitia Promenade
A paved seaside path cut into the rock around Acronauplia's foot, with open Argolic Gulf views and sight lines to all three of Nafplio's castles.
The Arvanitia promenade, known in Greek as the Gyros tis Arvanitias, or Arvanitia loop, is a paved seaside walkway about one kilometre long, cut into the rocks around the foot of Acronauplia. It runs from the harbour near the lighthouse around the south side of the peninsula to the small square and beach of Arvanitia. The path offers open views over the Argolic Gulf on one side and the walls of Acronauplia on the other, with sight lines to all three of Nafplio's castles: Acronauplia, Palamidi and Bourtzi.
Its name comes from the Arvanites, Albanian-speaking Greeks associated with the area since the medieval period. About halfway along, steps climb to the small rock-set church of Panagitsa, which the Venetians called Santa Maria della Grotta. Long treated as an emblematic Nafplio landmark, the walkway had worn over the years, and in 2024 the municipality began a formal project to restore it.
Did you know? From the Arvanitia loop you can see all three of Nafplio's castles at once: Acronauplia rising beside the path, Palamidi crowning the hill behind, and Bourtzi out in the harbour.
