A grand Venetian naval warehouse of 1713, now the Argolid's archaeological museum, home to the Dendra bronze panoply, the near-complete Mycenaean war-suit that recently survived an eleven-hour mock battle.
The Archaeological Museum of Nafplio occupies a two-storey stone building on Syntagma Square, raised in 1713 during Venice's second occupation of the Peloponnese. A marble inscription records that the Venetian fleet commander Agostino Sagredo built it as a naval warehouse. After Greek independence it served as barracks, as headquarters of the 8th Infantry Regiment and as a military club, before becoming the archaeological museum in the early 1930s.
Its collections trace the Argolid from prehistory to Late Antiquity, with finds from Tiryns, Midea, Asine, Dendra and Halieis. The most celebrated exhibit is the Dendra panoply, a suit of Mycenaean bronze body armour of about the late 15th century BC, made from fifteen sheets of bronze and found with a boar's-tusk helmet. Other highlights include large wheel-made clay idols from Midea and Tiryns and the female idol head known as the Lord of Asine.
