About Vouleftiko (First Greek Parliament)
A broad-domed former Ottoman mosque on Syntagma Square that became the seat of newly free Greece's first parliament in 1825, and a courtroom for a famous treason trial in 1834.
The Vouleftiko on Syntagma Square began as an Ottoman mosque, the Agha Pasha Mosque, built as a large square prayer hall beneath a single broad dome. Its construction date is uncertain, placed by tradition in the 1730s and by other sources in the early nineteenth century. After Greece won independence, with Nafplio serving as the first capital, the building was adapted to house the legislature of the emerging state.
It was inaugurated as the parliament on 21 September 1825 and hosted plenary sessions from the autumn of that year until the spring of 1826, before the young state's capital moved on. In 1834, under the Regency, the same hall served as the courtroom for the treason trial of the revolutionary leaders Theodoros Kolokotronis and Dimitrios Plapoutas. Today it survives as a preserved landmark, used for cultural events and exhibitions.
