Day 1

Morning

  1. Nafplio Old Town: A compact quarter of narrow streets and small squares between two fortresses, layered with Venetian and Ottoman marks, at the heart of Greece's first modern capital. 0.6 km to the next stop
  2. Palamidi Fortress: A vast Venetian fortress of eight bastions crowning a 216-metre hill above Nafplio, reached by a famous staircase and once the prison of Kolokotronis. 0.5 km to the next stop
  3. Church of Agios Spyridon: A modest domed Orthodox church of 1702, best known as the doorway where Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first head of state of independent Greece, was assassinated in 1831. 0.1 km to the next stop

  1. Bourtzi: A small Venetian sea-fort on an islet in Nafplio's harbour, once anchor of the great harbour chain, later home to the town's executioners and a hotel. 18 km to the next stop

  2. Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus: The ancient world's most famous healing sanctuary, where the sick slept to be cured in dreams by the god Asklepios; a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. 0.5 km to the next stop
  3. Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus: A 4th-century-BC theatre at the sanctuary of Asklepios, famous for acoustics that carry a coin's fall to the back of some fourteen thousand stone seats, and still staging ancient drama.
