About Syntagma Square

The marble-paved heart of Nafplio's old town, ringed by a Venetian arsenal, two former mosques and the houses of Revolution heroes, in Greece's first modern capital.

Syntagma Square is the marble-paved centre of Nafplio's old town and its main gathering place. Once called Plane-tree Square after a large plane tree, it was renamed Syntagma, meaning constitution, after the movement of September 1843 that demanded one, echoing the square of the same name in Athens. On its west side stands a Venetian naval arsenal of 1713, now the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio, home to the Dendra panoply, an almost complete suit of Mycenaean bronze armour.

The square is flanked by the Vouleftiko, a former Ottoman mosque that housed the first Hellenic Parliament in the 1820s, and by the Trianon, the town's oldest surviving mosque, which has also served as a church, school, theatre and cinema. Once ringed by the houses of Revolution leaders such as Kolokotronis and Nikitaras, it was reshaped into its present marble form in 1980. Nafplio was the first capital of the modern Greek state.

Did you know? The square's Archaeological Museum holds the Dendra panoply, an almost complete suit of Mycenaean bronze armour from about the late fifteenth century BC, one of the oldest complete suits of armour known in Europe.
