About Archaeological Museum of Mycenae

The on-site museum for Mycenae's finds, from pottery and jewellery to the gold death masks, though the famous 'Mask of Agamemnon' here is a replica of the Athens original.

The Archaeological Museum of Mycenae opened in 2003 on the northern slope of the citadel hill, near the Lion Gate at the edge of the archaeological site. Around 2,500 objects are on display, drawn from a site collection of more than 35,000 artefacts. The displays fill four galleries over two levels and include pottery, figurines, jewellery, fragments of wall-painting, tools, weapons and grave goods excavated at Mycenae.

Because the richest original finds were sent to the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, the on-site museum uses replica cases to convey the shaft-grave treasures. The gold death masks shown here, including the famous 'Mask of Agamemnon', are replicas; the originals are in Athens. That mask dates to about the 16th century BC, roughly three centuries before the traditional date of the Trojan War, so it is not actually Agamemnon's face. The museum lets visitors see the finds in the context of the citadel and its tombs.

Did you know? The gold 'Mask of Agamemnon' displayed here is a replica; the original is in Athens. It was made around the sixteenth century BC, some three centuries before the traditional Trojan War, so it cannot be Agamemnon's.
