About Bochali and the Venetian Castle

Bochali, the hill above Zakynthos town, with the Venetian castle on its summit among pine trees, ruined churches and old barracks, and wide views over the harbour, the town and the sea.

The castle stands on the site of the ancient acropolis. The Venetians rebuilt it from the late fifteenth century and finished its walls by 1646. Later the French, Russians and British used it. Inside lie ruins of six churches.

The castle is closed on Tuesdays, and it may close on days of very high fire risk in summer. It has a small ticket. Restoration works may limit some areas. The cafes of Bochali village have views of the town.

Did you know? After the Ottomans destroyed it in 1479, the Venetians rebuilt the castle of Zakynthos on Bochali hill and completed its walls by 1646.
