About Solomos Square

Solomos Square, the elegant main square of Zakynthos town by the harbour, named after the national poet of Greece, with his statue, arcaded buildings and the Museum of Zakynthos, all rebuilt after the earthquake of 1953.

The square is named after Dionysios Solomos, born in Zakynthos in 1798, who wrote the Hymn to Liberty, the Greek national anthem. The earthquake of 1953 destroyed almost the whole town, which was rebuilt afterwards.

The square is open at all times. The Museum of Zakynthos on its side has its own hours and is closed on Tuesdays. In the evening, the square and the nearby harbour front are lively with walkers.
