About Anafonitria Monastery

The Monastery of Panagia Anafonitria in the north-west of Zakynthos, a medieval monastery with a defensive stone tower, a frescoed church and a quiet courtyard, where Saint Dionysios lived as abbot.

The monastery is medieval, often dated to the fifteenth century. Its entrance tower once defended it and now serves as the bell tower. Saint Dionysios, the patron of the island, was its abbot in the later sixteenth century.

This is a working monastery: dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and keep quiet. Opening hours are not fixed. It lies on the road to the Navagio viewpoint, about 3 km away.

Did you know? Saint Dionysios, the patron of Zakynthos, became abbot of the Anafonitria monastery in the later sixteenth century and lived there for the rest of his life.
