About Meteora
Meteora looks physically impossible. Vast grey pillars of rock rise straight out of a green plain, hundreds of feet of sheer stone, and perched on top of them, somehow, are monasteries. For centuries the only way up was a rope net winched by hand, or a long ladder that the monks pulled up behind them. The name says it all: Meteora means something like suspended in the air.
The story began with hermits, who climbed into caves in these rocks around the eleventh century, looking for silence and God. Then, from the fourteenth century, as the Byzantine world fell apart and danger rose on the plain, monks built monasteries on the summits, out of reach of the turmoil below. At the peak there were around twenty-four of them. Six are still living communities today, and those are the ones you can visit. The rocks themselves, by the way, are not volcanic, as everyone assumes, but the worn-down stubs of an ancient river delta, sculpted by millions of years of water and wind.
Visiting is wonderfully simple and faintly humbling. A road now winds up to the monasteries, but the places themselves still run on monastic time. There is a dress code, long skirts for women and covered shoulders and knees for everyone, and inside, a world of candle smoke, gold icons and dim Byzantine frescoes. Below sit the little towns of Kalambaka and Kastraki, where you will sleep and eat.
A few stops are unmissable. At the Great Meteoron, the largest and oldest, you can still see the old net and windlass once used to haul up everything and everyone. Across the valley, the Holy Trinity stands so dramatically alone on its pillar that a James Bond film climbed it. And the rocks themselves, floodlit or bare, are the real monument.
Save an evening for the sunset. Drive out to one of the viewpoints as the light turns the pillars from grey to gold to rose, the monasteries glowing on their summits, the plain sinking into blue shadow below. It is one of those rare places that looks unreal in photographs and somehow more unreal in person. Start walking.

What to see in Meteora: all 10 stops
Every place below has its own narrated story in the app, and its own answers when you want more. Walk them in any order; the map shows what is around you.
-
Kalambaka
The valley town at the foot of Meteora, gateway by road and rail, home to a Byzantine church whose free-standing marble pulpit is reckoned unique in Greece.
-
Kastraki
The small village pressed right against the Meteora cliffs, a favourite base for rock climbers and the starting point for many of the old monastic footpaths into the rocks.
-
Meteora Rock Pillars
Immense conglomerate towers rising from the Thessalian plain, shaped over millions of years from an ancient river delta, not a volcano, and crowned by cliff-top monasteries.
-
Holy Monastery of St Nicholas Anapausas
The smallest Meteora monastery, built upward over three cramped floors because the rock is so narrow, and home to Theophanes the Cretan's earliest signed frescoes, painted in 1527.
-
Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ (Great Meteoron)
The oldest, largest and highest monastery of Meteora, crowning Broad Rock with a museum, a great frescoed church, a monks' ossuary, and roughly three hundred steps to climb.
-
Holy Monastery of Varlaam (All Saints)
The second-largest of the Meteora monasteries, rebuilt by two brothers from Ioannina, famous for frescoes signed by Frangos Katelanos, a preserved rope-and-windlass tower, and a giant rainwater barrel.
-
Holy Monastery of Roussanou (St Barbara)
A slender-pillared convent venerated as St Barbara, its three-storey church covering the whole summit; now home to nuns and reached by a little footbridge from the neighbouring rock.
-
Holy Monastery of the Holy Trinity (Agia Triada)
Crowning a 300-metre pillar above Kalambaka, this 14th-century monastery played a Bond villain's lair in 'For Your Eyes Only' and is reached by about 140 rock-cut steps from 1925.
-
Holy Monastery of St Stephen (Agios Stefanos)
The only Meteora monastery reached without a climb, across a short stone bridge. A convent since 1961, it keeps the venerated skull of St Charalambos and two historic churches.
-
Psaropetra Sunset Viewpoint
Psaropetra, the best-known sunset perch in Meteora: a flat-topped boulder where Roussanou, Varlaam and the Great Meteoron glow gold as the sun drops behind the pillars.
Three things most visitors miss
Kalambaka
The town's Turkish-derived name, Kalabaka, is usually translated as 'powerful fortress', but the etymology is still debated; in Byzantine times the same place was known instead as Stagoi, a fortress and bishopric.
Kastraki
Kastraki means 'little fortress': a Byzantine castle linked to Andronikos Palaiologos stood here until about 1362, and today only its ruins survive on the rock above the village's tiled roofs.
Meteora Rock Pillars
Contrary to a popular belief, the Meteora pillars are not volcanic: they are conglomerate and sandstone, the eroded remains of a river delta laid down between roughly 34 and 16 million years ago.
