About Kalambaka
The valley town at the foot of Meteora, gateway by road and rail, home to a Byzantine church whose free-standing marble pulpit is reckoned unique in Greece.
Kalambaka (also spelled Kalabaka) is the town at the foot of the Meteora massif and the principal road and rail gateway to the monasteries. It is the northwestern terminus of the old Thessaly railway and the seat of the municipality of Meteora, in the Trikala regional unit of Thessaly; the town proper recorded 8,573 residents at the 2021 census. In the Byzantine period it was known as Stagoi, a fortress and bishopric, while the modern Turkish-derived name is usually translated as 'powerful fortress', an etymology that remains debated.
The old town's Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, a three-aisled basilica built around the tenth to twelfth century on the ruins of an early-Christian predecessor, is the oldest surviving building in the area. Its free-standing marble ambo, set in the middle of the nave, is described as unique in Greece, and its interior preserves frescoes spanning the twelfth to sixteenth centuries, including a cycle painted in 1573.
Did you know? The town's Turkish-derived name, Kalabaka, is usually translated as 'powerful fortress', but the etymology is still debated; in Byzantine times the same place was known instead as Stagoi, a fortress and bishopric.
