Crowning a 300-metre pillar above Kalambaka, this 14th-century monastery played a Bond villain's lair in 'For Your Eyes Only' and is reached by about 140 rock-cut steps from 1925.
The Holy Monastery of the Holy Trinity, known in Greek as Agia Triada, crowns a near-vertical rock pillar rising roughly 300 metres above the town of Kalambaka. A monastery has stood here since the 14th century; the present katholikon, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was built in the 15th century, and its frescoes date from 1741. The gate is reached by about 140 steps cut into the rock, a stairway completed in 1925; earlier access was by removable ladders and a rope net.
A small chapel of St John the Baptist, carved into the rock beside the church, dates from the 17th century, and in 1909 a hidden crypt was reportedly found holding rare parchment manuscripts. The monastery is widely known for its appearance in the 1981 James Bond film 'For Your Eyes Only', in which it served as the villain's clifftop hideout; according to film histories the monks did not permit interior filming, and those interiors were built as a set elsewhere.
