About Holy Monastery of Roussanou (St Barbara)
A slender-pillared convent venerated as St Barbara, its three-storey church covering the whole summit; now home to nuns and reached by a little footbridge from the neighbouring rock.
The Holy Monastery of Roussanou occupies a slender, relatively low rock pillar in Meteora, its three-storey building covering almost the entire summit so that it appears to grow from the stone. It lies within the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1988. Two brothers from Ioannina, Ioasaph and Maximos, rebuilt it in the middle of the sixteenth century on the site of an older ruined church, and in 1614 it became a dependency of the nearby Varlaam monastery.
The katholikon is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ but is widely venerated as St Barbara, the dedication adopted by its present nuns; its walls were frescoed in 1560 by an anonymous painter of the Cretan School. Once reached only by ladders and a rope net, the rock gained a stairway and footbridge in 1930. Plundered during the 1940 occupation and later restored, Roussanou has been a convent since 1988, home to a community of more than fifteen nuns.
Did you know? Although its church is formally dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ, the monastery is universally known and venerated as St Barbara, the dedication embraced by the nuns who live there today.
