About Kastraki
The small village pressed right against the Meteora cliffs, a favourite base for rock climbers and the starting point for many of the old monastic footpaths into the rocks.
Kastraki is a small traditional village set among the Meteora rocks, built amphitheatrically beneath the cliffs on the southwest side of the massif, at about 275 metres above sea level and roughly a twenty-minute walk from Kalambaka. In the Kalabaka municipal unit of the Trikala regional unit, Thessaly, it recorded 1,023 residents at the 2021 census. Its name derives from 'kastro', after a Byzantine fortress linked to Andronikos Palaiologos that stood here until about 1362 and survives only as ruins.
The present village grew in the early eighteenth century from an amalgamation of small hamlets settled by refugees fleeing Ottoman rule, many from northern Epirus, though some tourism sources date its founding earlier. Kastraki is the closest village base to the monasteries, a well-known rock-climbing centre with routes on the surrounding conglomerate towers, and the starting point for many of the monastic and hermit trails of Meteora.
Did you know? Kastraki means 'little fortress': a Byzantine castle linked to Andronikos Palaiologos stood here until about 1362, and today only its ruins survive on the rock above the village's tiled roofs.
