About Meteora Rock Pillars

Immense conglomerate towers rising from the Thessalian plain, shaped over millions of years from an ancient river delta, not a volcano, and crowned by cliff-top monasteries.

The Meteora rock pillars are immense natural columns of conglomerate and sandstone that rise abruptly from the Thessalian plain near Kalambaka in central Greece. Despite a common misconception, they are not volcanic: the pebbles, sand and mud of the Pentalofos Formation were laid down in a river delta between roughly 34 and 16 million years ago, then shaped into freestanding towers by tectonic fracturing and erosion by water. Published heights vary, but the pillars rise on the order of 300 to 400 metres above the plain.

The name 'Meteora' means roughly 'suspended in the air'. Hermit monks lived in the caves and fissures of the rocks well before the cliff-top monasteries appeared, and an organised community had formed by around the eleventh to twelfth century. Twenty-four monasteries crowned the rocks at the sixteenth-century peak; six remain active today. Meteora was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 as a mixed cultural and natural site.

Did you know? Contrary to a popular belief, the Meteora pillars are not volcanic: they are conglomerate and sandstone, the eroded remains of a river delta laid down between roughly 34 and 16 million years ago.
