The smallest Meteora monastery, built upward over three cramped floors because the rock is so narrow, and home to Theophanes the Cretan's earliest signed frescoes, painted in 1527.
The Holy Monastery of St Nicholas Anapausas is the first monastery reached on the climb from the village of Kastraki, and the smallest in Meteora. Because its rock summit offered almost no level ground, it was built vertically over three successive floors rather than spread out. It stands more than 415 metres above the Pineios valley floor. Hermits are thought to have settled the rock in the 14th century, but the present monastery dates mainly from a rebuilding around 1510 by Saint Dionysius the Merciful, Metropolitan of Larissa, with the priest-monk Nikanor of Stagoi.
Its katholikon, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, was decorated in 1527 by the Cretan painter Theophanes, a leading master of the post-Byzantine Cretan School. These murals are his earliest known signed work, predating his celebrated frescoes on Mount Athos, and include a rare depiction of Adam naming the animals. Historically the monastery was reached only by retractable ladders and a rope net; it is now approached by a footpath and rock-cut steps.
