About Holy Monastery of Varlaam (All Saints)
The second-largest of the Meteora monasteries, rebuilt by two brothers from Ioannina, famous for frescoes signed by Frangos Katelanos, a preserved rope-and-windlass tower, and a giant rainwater barrel.
The Holy Monastery of Varlaam, dedicated to All Saints, is the second-largest of the Meteora monasteries. It stands on a conglomerate pillar roughly 595 metres above sea level, within the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1988. The rock is named for the hermit Varlaam, who settled it in the fourteenth century, after which the summit lay abandoned for nearly two centuries. In the early sixteenth century the priest-monks Theophanes and Nektarios Apsarades of Ioannina re-established the community and built the ascent tower.
After years of hauling materials up the cliff, the katholikon of All Saints was completed around 1541. Its walls were frescoed in 1548 by the noted painter Frangos Katelanos of Thebes, with the narthex added later by the Kontaris brothers. The monastery preserves a large wooden barrel once used to store rainwater on the waterless summit, and its historic rope-net windlass remains on view. It is an active men's monastery reached today by bridge and stairway.
Did you know? By the monastery's own account, the brothers spent about twenty-two years carrying building materials up the sheer rock, then raised the great church of All Saints in only about twenty days, around 1541.
