About Psaropetra Sunset Viewpoint
Psaropetra, the best-known sunset perch in Meteora: a flat-topped boulder where Roussanou, Varlaam and the Great Meteoron glow gold as the sun drops behind the pillars.
Psaropetra, known as 'Sunset Rock', is the best-known sunset viewpoint in Meteora, a flat-topped boulder on the monastery circuit road between the Roussanou junction and the fork toward Varlaam. Facing roughly south to southwest, it looks out as the sun drops behind the rock towers and floods them with golden light. From the rock several monasteries are visible at once, with Roussanou in the near foreground and Varlaam, the Great Meteoron and St Nicholas Anapafsas beyond.
Reaching the top requires only a short scramble of about two to three metres up an angled boulder face, and the small parking area beside it fills quickly before sunset. A separate, larger observation deck about 400 metres south faces over the broader valley and is better suited to sunrise. Several nearby pull-offs are each promoted as the Meteora sunset spot, so there is no single official viewpoint over the UNESCO-listed pillars.
Did you know? Psaropetra is usually glossed as 'Fish Rock', from the Greek words for fish and stone, though no authoritative source actually confirms the meaning, so the charming translation is best enjoyed with caution.
