About The Albanian Riviera & Butrint

Welcome to the Albanian Riviera, the Ionian coast of southern Albania. Here, the Ceraunian Mountains plunge into a sea of extraordinary clarity, and along the shore lie white pebble beaches, small coves, olive groves and villages, with the Greek island of Corfu always on the horizon.

This coast has a very long history. In ancient times, it belonged to the land of Epirus, home of the Chaonians, a Greek-speaking people. Their city of Butrint, near the southern tip, later became a Roman colony and a Byzantine bishopric, and then passed to the Angevins and the Venetians, before it was slowly abandoned. Today, its ruins in the forest form a national park and a World Heritage Site.

Later came the Ottomans, who ruled Albania for more than four centuries, and around 1800, the powerful Ali Pasha of Tepelena, who built and rebuilt castles along this coast and inland. Inland, the stone town of Gjirokastër, with its tower houses below a great castle, is a second World Heritage Site.

In the twentieth century, Albania became one of the most closed countries in the world. From 1944 to 1990, the communist regime of Enver Hoxha cut it off from its neighbours, and built many thousands of concrete bunkers, some of which you can still see along the coast. Since 1991, Albania has opened up, and in the last fifteen years the number of visitors to the Riviera has grown fast.

The Riviera is also a land of many peoples and faiths. Albanian-speaking and Greek-speaking communities live along this coast, and Orthodox churches stand near mosques and old monasteries. Food is simple and fresh: grilled fish, olive oil, local cheese and honey, and herbs from the mountains. In summer, the coast is lively and crowded; in spring and autumn, it is quiet, green and mild.

Explore it slowly: swim at Ksamil and Gjipe, walk among the ruins of Butrint, look into the Blue Eye, climb to the castles of Lëkurësi and Gjirokastër, and cross the Llogara Pass for the great view. Respect the rules of the protected areas, and the customs of the people who live here. Enjoy the Albanian Riviera, and let us begin.
