About Butrint Baptistery and Great Basilica

The baptistery of Butrint, a round building of the sixth century with two rings of granite columns and a famous mosaic floor, and nearby the tall ruined walls of the Great Basilica, deep in the forest.

The round baptistery dates from the sixth century, when Butrint was the seat of a bishop. Its mosaic floor shows peacocks, deer and other animals around the font. The Great Basilica nearby was built in the same century and rebuilt in 1267.

The mosaic is normally covered with sand to protect it, so you see the columns and the plan; photos are shown in the museum. The site is part of the national park, with a ticket and seasonal hours.

Did you know? The baptistery of Butrint, built in the sixth century, probably inside an older Roman bath, has two rings of eight granite columns around a cross-shaped font.
