About Old Town of Gjirokastër

The old town of Gjirokastër, the City of Stone, a World Heritage Site of tall Ottoman tower houses with roofs of stone slabs, steep cobbled lanes and an old bazaar below the castle.

Gjirokastër was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2005, and joined with Berat in 2008. Its tower houses, called kule, date from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. The writer Ismail Kadare and the communist leader Enver Hoxha were both born here.
