About Gjirokastër Castle

Gjirokastër Castle, the great stone fortress on the ridge above the old town, rebuilt by Ali Pasha, with vaulted galleries, a clock tower, a former prison and wide views over the Drino valley.

The castle goes back to at least the thirteenth century. Ali Pasha of Tepelena rebuilt it after 1812. It later served as a prison under King Zog and the communist regime, and since 1971 it has held a museum of arms.

The castle has a ticket and seasonal hours, shorter in winter; some museum days may vary, so check locally. Parts may be fenced for repairs. The Cold War Tunnel in town has its own ticket.

Did you know? Gjirokastër Castle was rebuilt by Ali Pasha of Tepelena after he took it in 1812; its clock tower, the town's best-known landmark, dates from his time.
