About Blue Eye
The Blue Eye, Syri i Kaltër, a deep karst spring in the forest between Saranda and Gjirokastër, where icy water rises from an unknown depth, deep blue at the centre and turquoise at the edges.
The spring is the main source of the Bistrica River. Divers have gone down about 50 metres without reaching the bottom. The water stays cold, at about 10 to 13 °C, all year. The area is a protected nature monument.
Swimming is not allowed. A forest path of about 1.5 to 2 km leads from the entrance to the spring. There is a small entry fee, paid in cash, and parking costs extra. Summer days are crowded.
Did you know? Divers have gone down about 50 metres into the Blue Eye spring in southern Albania without reaching the bottom; its true depth is still unknown.
