About Himarë and Gjipe Beach

Himarë, the old town on the Riviera with its hilltop castle and beaches, and Gjipe, a hidden cove at the mouth of a narrow canyon between Himarë and Dhërmi, reached only on foot or by boat.

Old Himarë stands on a hill with a castle and Byzantine churches; the newer town lies by the sea. Gjipe is a separate cove about 15 km north, between Dhërmi and Himarë, at the mouth of a limestone canyon.

Gjipe is reached on foot from a car park, about half an hour down a rocky path, or by boat in summer. Boats and camping are seasonal. Avoid the canyon in or after heavy rain, as flash floods are possible.

Did you know? The old quarter of Himarë stands on a castle hill whose walls probably date from the fifth or fourth century BC; it has Byzantine churches.
