About Lëkurësi Castle

Lëkurësi Castle, a square Ottoman fortress with round towers on a hill above Saranda, with wide views over the town, the island of Corfu, the islets of Ksamil and, on clear days, the lagoon of Butrint.

The castle is traditionally dated to 1537, when the Ottomans under Suleiman the Magnificent fought Venice for Corfu, and it was later reworked. It has a square plan with two round towers. A restaurant now stands inside its walls.

The grounds are usually open to visitors, but no official hours are published. The restaurant is seasonal. The castle is about 3 to 4 km by road from the centre; at sunset, the small car park fills quickly.
