About Saranda

Saranda, the harbour town of the Albanian Riviera on a wide bay of the Ionian Sea, with its long seafront promenade, palm trees and cafes, and the island of Corfu on the horizon.

In ancient times, the port here was called Onchesmos. The modern name comes from the monastery of the Forty Saints on the hill above. From a small village in 1912, Saranda has grown into the main town of the Riviera.

The promenade is open at all times. Ferries cross to Corfu, with fewer sailings in winter. Many seasonal cafes and boat trips close or reduce service from late autumn.

Did you know? Saranda takes its name from the monastery of the Forty Saints, Agioi Saranta in Greek, on the hill above the town; Italian maps called it Santi Quaranta.
