About Český Krumlov
Český Krumlov barely looks real. A tiny medieval town of red roofs and cobbled lanes is wrapped almost entirely by a tight loop of the Vltava, and reared up over it is a castle far too grand for a place this small. Film crews come here to play other centuries, and the town obliges, because almost nothing has changed in four hundred years.
That is the strange gift of being left behind. In the Middle Ages the noble Rožmberk family grew rich here on silver and trade and stamped their five-petalled rose on everything; the Eggenbergs and Schwarzenbergs followed. Then the modern world passed the town by. No factories came, no boulevards were driven through, no war flattened it, and by the time anyone thought to knock it down, it was too lovely to lose. In 1992 the whole town became a World Heritage Site.
So the pleasure here is simply to wander. The lanes twist and climb and double back, opening onto the river or a sudden view of the castle. In summer the Vltava below the ramparts fills with people in canoes and rubber rafts, bumping over the weirs with a beer in hand. And in the castle moat, improbably, live real bears, a tradition the castle has kept for centuries.
Climb the round castle tower, painted top to bottom in Renaissance patterns, for the view that lays the whole town at your feet. Inside the castle hides a Baroque theatre so complete, with its original scenery and creaking machinery, that it is one of only a handful left in the world. And in the town below, a gallery remembers the painter Egon Schiele, who came in 1911 and was promptly run out by scandalised locals.
