About Castle Garden (Zámecká zahrada)
A 750-metre Baroque terraced garden behind the castle, home to a Rococo cascade fountain and an open-air theatre whose seats, not the stage, revolve.
The Castle Garden is a terraced Baroque garden stretching roughly 750 metres along the ridge west of the castle, laid out chiefly by the Eggenberg and Schwarzenberg owners and reaching its present form around the mid-eighteenth century. Its centrepiece is the Rococo Cascade Fountain, a multi-level composition of water deities, aquatic animals and allegories of the four seasons, while the mid-garden Bellarie pavilion and an open-air revolving auditorium, first turned in 1958, add later chapters. That modern theatre, whose banked seating rotates to face changing garden backdrops, has been judged a threat to the garden's heritage integrity yet continues to operate.
Did you know? The garden's revolving auditorium began in 1958 with about eighty seats; today its permanent steel structure holds roughly six hundred, making it one of Czechia's most-visited open-air summer stages.
