About Seminary Garden Viewpoint (Seminární zahrada)

From the Seminary Garden terrace, the whole postcard assembles itself: castle, painted tower, red roofs and the Vltava looping below.

The terrace of the Seminary Garden, the garden of the former Jesuit seminary on Horní street, beside the Regional Museum, offers the classic panorama of Český Krumlov: the castle, its Renaissance-painted Castle Tower, the red roofs of the old town and the Vltava's horseshoe bend. Completed in 1581 by Baldassare Maggi of Arogno and given its illusionistic facade in 1590, the tower dominates a townscape inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Other overlooks, the Cloak Bridge, the castle terraces and Křížová hora across the valley, frame variations of the same scene.

Did you know? The Castle Tower's stonework is largely a painted illusion: the pilasters, cornices and faux masonry were brushed on in 1590 by the Rožmberk court painter Bartoloměj Beránek, nicknamed Jelínek.
