About Castle Baroque Theatre (Zámecké barokní divadlo)
A candlelit 1766 court theatre preserved almost complete, original stage, painted scenery and rope-driven machinery intact, one of only a handful left in the world.
The Castle Baroque Theatre is one of the very few Baroque court theatres in the world to survive with its original auditorium, stage, painted scenery, machinery, costumes and props essentially intact. A first theatre was built here in 1680–1682 under Prince Johann Christian I von Eggenberg, and the present building was rebuilt and re-equipped in 1765–1766 for Prince Josef Adam zu Schwarzenberg, with architecture by Andreas Altomonte and scenery and ceiling paintings by Johann Wetschel and Leo Märkl. Because it was never modernised, it preserves a complete Baroque stage 'organism', including a rope-and-winch system with counterweights driving roughly forty movable flat-frames that change whole scenes in seconds. Its closest peer is the Drottningholm Palace Theatre in Sweden of 1766. Owing to its fragility, it is shown only on limited guided tours and hosts very few candlelit performances each year. It should not be confused with the separate, modern open-air Revolving Auditorium in the castle garden.
Did you know? A hidden system of ropes, winches and counterweights can swap an entire painted scene, some forty sliding frames, in seconds, and it still works, groaning to life whenever guides demonstrate it.
