About Castle Tower (Zámecká věž)
The town's emblem: a slender Renaissance tower whose pink-and-gold 'stonework' is entirely painted illusion, with 162 steps up to the finest view in Český Krumlov.
The Castle Tower rises beside the Little Castle at the second courtyard and is one of the oldest structures in the complex, built around a round thirteenth-century core that originally served as a watchtower over the gate. Its present form dates from a Renaissance rebuild of the 1570s and 1580s by the Italian architect Baldassare Maggi, with the cylindrical upper storeys completed just before 1590. The colourful exterior, painted by Bartoloměj Jelínek in 1590 and restored in 1996, is illusionistic painted architecture, fresco and sgraffito imitating cornices, arcading and coloured stone, rather than genuine carved or coloured masonry. Rising through six storeys to an arcaded gallery and lantern, the tower can be climbed via 162 steps, and its banner stands roughly 86 metres above the level of the Vltava, offering the classic panorama over the town.
