About Church of St Vitus (Kostel svatého Víta)

The Gothic parish church crowning the old town, often mistaken for a cathedral, whose soaring spire is actually a Victorian-era imitation.

The Church of St Vitus is the Gothic parish church that crowns the old town opposite the castle, built between about 1407 and 1439 on the foundations of an earlier church of 1309. Its hall-type triple nave carries net ribbed vaulting and ends in an elongated five-sided presbytery, and for centuries it served as the principal sanctuary of the Rosenberg and later Schwarzenberg lords. Despite frequent captions calling it a cathedral, it never held a bishop's seat; its prominent octagonal spire is not medieval but a neo-Gothic addition of 1893–1894, replacing an earlier Baroque onion dome.

Did you know? Despite guidebooks and postcards labelling it a cathedral, St Vitus is a parish church that never held a bishop or served as the seat of a diocese.
