About Latrán Quarter
The castle's old service quarter along the river, guarded by the town's last surviving gate and home to a brewery running since the 1620s.
Latrán is the medieval quarter on the castle bank of the Vltava, strung along the street below the castle rock, where servants, scribes and craftsmen of the great household once lived. Its name derives from the Latin latus, meaning 'side', and it lay outside the town's jurisdiction until it was incorporated in 1555. Landmarks along it include the Budějovice Gate of 1598–1602, the last of the town's gates still standing; a former Minorite and Poor Clares monastery founded in 1350; and the Eggenberg brewery, converted from a Rosenberg residence and arsenal in the 1620s and brewing to this day.
Did you know? The Budějovice Gate is the last of Český Krumlov's town gates left standing; the rest were demolished in the nineteenth century when the walls became an inconvenience.
